VNA forklift training in Birmingham prepares operators for very narrow aisle trucks — including man-up and man-down configurations — used in high-density racking. Aisles are less forgiving than counterbalance work: wire or rail guidance, high lift heights and strict pedestrian segregation change the risk profile completely.

Who this VNA course is for

• Reach or counterbalance operators converting onto VNA
• Operators whose warehouse has already narrowed the aisles
• Novices whose first authorised truck will be VNA (less common, but available)
• Fleets refreshing VNA competence after three to five years

If you have never driven a lift truck, novice forklift training on counterbalance is still the usual first ticket. Adding VNA afterwards is a conversion.

Man-up and man-down

Our ITSSAR VNA course covers both man-up and man-down categories. Completing the man-up pathway qualifies operators to use both machine types, which matters when a site mixes cabin-elevating trucks with man-down turret or similar equipment.

Training includes:

• Pre-use inspection and causes of truck and load instability
• Narrow-aisle driving under automatic guidance
• Hydraulic operations, battery care and load handling
• Man-up loading and awkward loads
• Classroom theory plus practical instruction in restricted space

The ratio is 3:1:1 (three trainees, one instructor, one truck) so you get enough aisle time.

Duration

• Novice candidates: 3–5 days
• Experienced but untrained: 3–4 days
• Refresher: 1 day (recommended every 3 years)
• Conversion from another category: 1 day

Guided aisles and pedestrians

VNA operations fail when pedestrians share the guided path. Training includes how the truck behaves under guidance, but the site must still segregate walkways and enforce rules after the course. PUWER and LOLER sit beside L117: the truck must be maintained and thoroughly examined, not only driven by someone with a certificate.

If your warehouse is mid-refit, tell us whether you need man-up, man-down, or both, and whether conversion from reach is realistic this month. We would rather schedule after the guidance is live than assess on a system that will change next week.

Bring existing reach or counterbalance certificates. Novices can train on VNA, but most Birmingham employers still want a counterbalance foundation first. We will recommend the honest order.

On-site dates need a serviceable VNA and a clear aisle. If you cannot offer that, use the Birmingham centre for individuals and plan familiarisation on your guided system afterwards — then complete specific job training on site as L117 requires.

VNA is not “advanced counterbalance”. The guidance, lift height and cabin (on man-up trucks) change how you think about pedestrians and emergency lowering. Treat it as its own qualification. Keep your reach or counterbalance current with a refresher if you still use those trucks on the same site — one VNA day does not refresh everything.

If you are an employer specifying VNA on a job advert, say man-up or man-down. Candidates guess wrong, book the wrong conversion, and arrive unable to work your fleet. We would rather take a phone call and match the course than waste a week of your labour cover.

VNA courses at our centre still require you to complete familiarisation on the guided system at work. Do not skip that step. Bring safety boots and your last certificate. If the VNA on site is man-up only, say so when you book so we are not planning a man-down conversion you will never use. Small groups stay at three delegates; we will not overload an aisle to cut the day short. After you pass, your employer still signs familiarisation on their guided system before unsupervised work — keep that record with the certificate. That pairing is what customer auditors look for, not the course day on its own.
